‘Big shoes to fill’ – Liverpool fans react as Darwin Nunez’s £85m transfer is confirmed

Liverpool fans have reacted to the signing of Benfica striker Darwin Nunez.

The 22-year-old joins the club on a six-year deal for an initial fee of £64.1m (€75m). The fee could rise to a club record £85.4m if all potential add-ons are paid.

He will wear the number 27 shirt vacated by Divock Origi, who is leaving the club with a free agent this summer. This is Liverpool’s second signing after Fabio Carvalho, who will join Fulham on July 1.

Fans waited anxiously all day for the announcement as the player passed his medical on Tuesday. They took to social media after the confirmation and there are even posts from past and present Liverpool players.

A fan said: “It’s always a great day when your club sign one of the best young strikers in the world. Welcome.”

While another added: ‘Big shoes to fill with Origi’s squad number.’

Neil Mellor and Trent Alexander-Arnold have both welcomed Nunez, with the current Liverpool right-back joking on Twitter: “How can I help you?”

The former Benfica man will start his career at Anfield next month when the international transfer window opens on July 1. News of the signing comes amid interest in winger Sadio Mane, who has been the subject of two offers from Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.
