Christian Cowan sends dizzying Crocs down the runway at NYFW – Footwear News
Christian Cowan x Crocs has arrived. On Tuesday night, the designer held his Spring/Summer 23 show during New York Fashion Week, where models could be seen walking the catwalk in Crocs.
This marks the start of the first-ever partnership between the two brands. The collaboration consists of three styles, which Cowan has reinvented.
“I wanted to have the variation because they all have different uses in your daily life,” he told FN backstage on the show. “And then I wanted to bring our brand identity to the Crocs brand identity. I’m known for the glitz and the glam and the checkerboard and the pink and the bows. So it’s basically all of us in one. And it’s just about bringing in the glamour, which makes so much sense to do with Crocs because Crocs experiments so much, and that’s my favorite thing with fashion is to experiment.
The Christian Cowan X Crocs Mega Crush clog, for example, stands 61mm tall and features an improved rubber tread and increased proportions. The shoe is all black and detailed in removable metal chains that can also be worn as a necklace with a Crocs pendant. For the first time, Christian Cowan X Crocs introduces Jibbitz charms that can be converted into other wearable accessories.
Additionally, the collection introduces an ode to yin and yang with the Christian Cowan X Crocs Classic clogs, featuring a left clog in black and a right clog in white. This new style also features Jibbitz charms, including jewel accents and metallic chains.
And finally, Cowan took the classic Crocs sandals and turned them into candy pink with oversized pink bows that can also be worn as hair clips.
“We are a ready-to-wear brand so I wanted Crocs to become ready-to-wear,” he noted of the versatile Jibbitz. The Crocs collaboration also inspired looks from Cowan’s Spring/Summer 23 collection, as seen in a black and white leather look, reminiscent of the style of yin and yang clogs.
“This spring collection was all about expression and freedom and as you can see it’s like every pattern, color and texture under the sun. I wanted to show that you don’t always have to having heels. And even though we still do it and still do it, it can still be really fabulous,” Cowan said.
To celebrate the launch, Crocs and Cowan enlisted Michelle Visage and Simone from “RuPaul Drag Race”, Sonja Morgan from the “Real Housewives” franchise and Christine Quinn from Netflix’s hit TV series “Selling Sunset”, as well as singer Tinashe, makeup artist Jazelle, “Saturday Night Live” personality Chloe Fineman and model Daphne Groeneveld will appear in the campaign.
The limited-edition capsule sells for between $50 and $100. All styles will be available on Crocs websites starting September 28 in the US and Europe, and September 29 in Japan and Australia. The collaboration will also be available at select outlets across Europe, including Offsprings at Selfridges, Galeries Lafayette and LuisaviaRoma.
A portion of proceeds from the Christian Cowan X Crocs collaboration will be donated to the Ali Forney Center, which provides assistance to homeless LGBTQIA+ youth in the United States.
