Serial sneaker: women attacked for designer shoes

A Melbourne man has been charged with attacking five women and stealing their designer shoes.

It is alleged that he followed his victims before assaulting them and then running away with their high-end shoes.

In an incident in the early hours of December 20 last year, a man followed a woman near Batman St in West Melbourne for five minutes before the attack and then took off in a vehicle.

The 23-year-old woman was scratched and bruised in the assault and reported the incident to police.

Detectives searched a property in the city on January 26, uncovering branded sneakers that were allegedly stolen and arresting a 31-year-old man.

He faces charges of robbery, intentional bodily harm and assault with intent to commit sexual assault.

The man has also been charged with four similar incidents in suburban Melbourne, in which he also allegedly stole designer shoes from his victims.

Police say he attacked a woman on Merton St in Springvale around 10pm on July 19, 2021 and on nearby Springvale Rd just before 10pm on October 6.

Two other alleged attacks happened near Clayton station, in a lane near the station around 10.30pm on November 14, and on the corner of Thompson St and Flora Rd just after midnight on January 10.

Detectives say their investigation is ongoing and anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers or file a confidential report online with police.

The man was taken into custody to appear in court on April 21.
