Stop & Shop in Dayton, NJ Permanently Closing

It’s not often you see a major grocery store closing its doors for good, but The Patch just learned that Dayton’s Stop & Shop will be closing on February 24.

I’m sure the store’s regular customers are very disappointed. The reason for the closure? Looks like sales are down.

The article quoted a Stop & Shop representative saying, “After a detailed review of the operating performance of our stores, we have made the difficult decision not to renew our lease at our store located at 24 Summerfield Blvd in Dayton, NJ All stores and pharmacy associates will have the option to transfer to other Stop & Shop locations in the region.”

Phew. It’s good news. I immediately thought of all those people losing their jobs. I’m glad they can transfer.

There are other NJ Stop & Shop locations nearby at Pennington (Denow Road and Route 31), Franklin Park (Route 27), Monroe (Perrineville Road), Flemington (Route 31).

Traditional grocery stores now have more competition with big retailers like Walmart selling food at lower prices and Amazon delivering groceries right to your door.

It’s unclear whether or not there will be any “out of business” sales, but there’s a good chance there will be… be on the lookout and prepare to stock up .
